What is DALHAM?
DALHAM is an independent not for profit social enterprise dedicated to advance, promote and practice Creative and Liberal Education as a lifelong endeavor. DALHAM Foundation aims at increasing the importance of Non-STEM education in both developing and developed nations, and is dedicated to introduce products which will serve as advance tools for creative and liberal education by bringing a new age technology based analytics for institutions to help students turn their dreams into reality. It aims at helping intellectual development meet the latent creativity which is needed to expand beyond the horizons.

D-ART is our first offering for students and institutions to seek admission to various Non - STEM programmes at the undergraduate level in Government run and privately managed institutions in India. DALHAM is the first platform in India that deciphers the importance of liberal education through an assessment focused on testing students’ overall development, providing them with insight on their strengths and areas of interest. The recommendations for admission to a variety of programmes are made purely on the basis of merit obtained in D-ART conducted by DALHAM.

Purpose

Our aim is to prepare young people to be diverse and creative in their thinking, have knowledge of factual realities of the country and filter through the lens and perspectives of the colonial vision, focus more on the cultural wisdom and heritage and put the social baggage in the realistic historical perspective and not judge and evaluate the country in the comparative frame of the west.

Message to the Universe:
The universe is full of mysteries. Solving the enigma of this world has always been the single most important pursuit since the dawn of mankind. Acquiring knowledge and using it to change the world around us is the quest that motivates us to take giant leaps towards a promising future. Life has always been a journey of bringing cognizance to the human soul. If we are to continue this proud tradition of exploration, it is vital that we guide young minds to have the same fervor and zeal when it comes to knowledge absorption and application.

Globalization has completely changed the way we experience life and we must allow our children to learn not just from books but life itself. We need to test their ability to acquire natural knowledge, i.e. all that they learn from the world around them. Children who can learn from their experience will have the necessary tools to cope successfully in the global sphere.

To realise a child’s true potential, we need to look beyond academia and celebrate the idea of acquiring knowledge and life skills that will help them not just survive but thrive. Indian institutions have time and again ignored the need for innovative teaching models and knowledge assessments, which over time has had troubling results. In the era of big data and STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics, it is easy to discredit a liberal education. While we focus on the technical and analytical quotient of knowledge, we are unknowingly beginning to ignore the cultural influences around us. A Non-STEM education is a cohesive collection of experiences, each providing its own unique contribution to help us understand the world we live in better. A tilt in focus on stem courses automatically creates an imbalance in individual learning as well as human progress.

Non-STEM education has a long history in India, with Takshashila and Nalanda attracting leading scholars of the ancient world to study a wide range of fascinating subjects. Unfortunately, it seems that the country’s education system is currently beset by numerous issues, including the erosion of substantive focus on the arts and humanities. It is a deep-rooted problem that is a result of gaps throughout the education system as well as a society that pressures young people into early specialisation and career paths that are perceived to be more prestigious.

There has been a slow shift and few institutions have bloomed to pay equal emphasis to the sciences as well as the arts. Many schools/colleges today give students the chance to dabble in a wide variety of Non-STEM courses. Getting exposure to many different aspects at an early age is a crucial element to finding one’s passion, skills, and their “true calling”. The idea, however, has yet to resonate with the majority. And students continue to be pushed into career paths which they, most often neither have the interest in or aptitude for. Research shows that students who have been given the opportunity to pursue their studies in Non-STEM education have shown to be more happy and active.

The fact remains that in the current evolving corporate landscape, skills gained by social sciences and humanities students can be applied to all facets of life which make for extremely rewarding careers. We need to encourage our children to explore their passion and steer them towards a successful life and a rewarding job they love. Teachers, parents and the education fraternity need to come together to understand and promote Non-STEM education. Leaders all over the world have lately been investing in research-based universities and aspects of liberal arts learning in the hopes of improving students happiness and nourishing future generations with a better capacity for innovation and navigating the inevitable societal disruptions to come.

As India transitions into a knowledge economy, adopting best practices in liberal arts education will surely contribute to its 21st century success. Together, we can encourage students to peruse knowledge that inspires them to go beyond themselves. And as we move forward, we must be open to a world that is as conducive to Non-STEM subjects as it is biased to the STEM. We must encourage our kids to become the best their potential allows them to. The world must make space for design, arts, literature, humanities, architecture and media just as it has pushed science, engineering, medicine and technology (STEM). The graduates of tomorrow should become policymakers, educators, Journalists and international actors who will carve out a niche for the Indian identity.

Dalham Foundation envisions to transform education from drudgery to a joyous journey. We are dedicated to creating an atmosphere conducive to positive education where students don’t become victims of rat race and are not weighed down by the academic pressure and unrealistic expectations that often drive them to depression and even suicide.

Education

Dalham Foundation strongly condemns rote learning and advocates holistic education that imparts 21st century skills to the young learners. We believe in creating a dynamic curriculum that gives equal importance to academics and co-curriculars. The foundation motivates students to discover themselves, develop positive social behaviour, achieve physical and mental well being as well as appreciate beauty and art.

Redefine Learning
Assessment

Dalham Foundation calls for the significant need to overhaul the current learning assessment practices. We firmly believe that the standardised ‘one size fits all’ tests focusing on storing and retrieving information are inadequate to assess the real potential of a child. We at Dalham Foundation are working towards a novel learning assessment system that gives precedence to problem-solving and creative thinking over memorisation and discovers the true abilities of a child.
